Breaf

Module Overview:
In this 30 credit module you are presented with the opportunity to begin development on a short animated production (1-3mins) which will eventually be suitable for public screening at festivals and exhibitions. The majority of the time allocated to this module is intended for self-directed study, supported by regular tutorials for technical, aesthetic and conceptual guidance.

Work to be assessed
Week 0
You must present at least 3 video sketches or rough animatics that will effectively communicate your ideas from which to develop a short animatied film to be completed in May 2011. You will be assessed on how creatively you have approached the brief and at Week 7, whether you have demonstrated the ability to expand upon your initial ideas and to identify and abandon the weaker ideas in favour of a stronger one.
Week 10
You must present a completed animatic or a full-length video sketch with sound which will effectively communicate your basic narrative (or concept) and how you intend to translate that narrative or idea into film language. You will be assessed on how well you have engaged with the process of developing your film from (at least) 3 video sketches in week 1 to one strong idea which as been worked and reworked. You must provide visual material to support this. The animatic must also include a short clip of ‘finished’ test animation, which demonstrates how you intend to execute your final film and is to a professional standard.

Assessment Guidance

A general guide to the process and criteria for assessment is given in your course handbook, but in particular, the assessment panel will be looking for evidence of the following:

· A unique and innovative script including examples of previous drafts and another supporting work, which provides proof of research and development.

· An animatic of your film which displays your developing skills as a communicator, using imaginative and interesting visual means.

· We will be looking for evidence of editing (pace and rhythm), shot composition, sound design, use of a design ethos, control of meaning, and an understanding of your target audience.

· A level of self-motivation, engagement and autonomy as befits work at level 6 of degree study.

· The test animation must be to a professional standard.
